Lacey's Garden – Childhood Memories and Learning How To Garden

February 20, 2009

I wanted to tell you that I do not garden for any philosophical or ideological reasons; I garden because I enjoy it.  I tell people that I like to dig in the dirt.  Maybe my desire to plant things comes from my memories of childhood when I would make mud pies and “plant” twigs in it. I can say that playing in the dirt and planting things are some things I have loved to do for as long as I can remember.

I remember going to the creek houses to help my dad.  I got to hold the yardstick when he measured the height of the tomato plants.  I also can remember going out to the bell pepper fields and “picking” peppers.  Maybe it just is in the genes, I don’t know. What I do know is that the few times we lived in tiny apartments and I had no dirt, I think I about went crazy!

Even though I grew up amidst the greenhouses, I do not know very much about vegetable gardening.  I know more about bedding plants.  And I know next to nothing about organic gardening.  Everything I am sharing with yall is what I am learning by doing and reading about it.  I guess the reason I am saying all this is to tell you that ANYONE can garden.  I have been checking gardening books out at the library by the dozens.  All of them have had something to offer.  Most important thing though ….HAVE FUN!!!!!
